Data Mining (4740/6740) - Student Evaluation

- Fall 2017 -

38 students | 1 lecture (3 hrs) per week | R

At the end of each course that I teach, I often ask my students to fill in a short, anonymous survey about the class. Here their quantitative evaluation (on the right), as well as their entire comments (below) are shown.

Question

What did you like about this class?

"Very laid back so didn’t stress as much as I did with other classes"

12/6/2017 22:45:01

"The mini projects were very helpful. I would have been much more confused going into the final project if we hadn't had the previous exposure to R and it's functionality. Also the lenient grading was much appreciated by all students considering the lack of collective knowledge of R."

12/7/2017 11:08:55

"How hands on it was."

12/7/2017 11:15:57

"I liked the way the grading system was laid out. We had multiple pop quizzes but only the top 5 were taken. I thought, for the most part, quizzes were very easy if you paid attention to that class which provided an incentive for me to pay attention to everything and engage. If the class as a whole still didn't understand the concept, you would go through for lengthy periods of time to understand it. The final project was great in that you left it open to us to decide what we wanted to do. Understanding the idea of the model was a little more difficult but it was still a fun project that I plan to feature in my own portfolio."

12/7/2017 11:33:17

"Pop quizzes were annoying but helpful overall for retaining the information. If nothing else, I have something concrete to study due to the lack of a midterm, normal quizzes, and homework. You yourself are pretty enthusiastic, friendly, and actually helpful to the students despite how much we whine which I'm sure we all appreciate. I can count on one hand how many other professors are even remotely close to your level of teaching. At the very least, this data mining class seems a lot better and more passable than the ones taught by other professors I've heard about (not naming names)."

12/7/2017 12:36:21

"hands-on project"

12/7/2017 12:38:33

"The explanations to the concepts and methods are very clear and the projects are also helpful. Btw, you're very handsome. :)"

12/7/2017 16:13:11

"Bonus opportunity Max taking the highest five grades instead of any five grades for the pop quizzes."

12/8/2017 6:05:02

"The feeling of the professor knowing what they are talking about and being very interactive with the students. Thanks for the great class!"

12/8/2017 7:54:14

"Overall everything"

12/8/2017 12:35:21

"Fun and interesting"

12/8/2017 14:23:07

"Well structured, course content very interesting too"

12/8/2017 14:24:09

"The pop quizzes and real world talks."

12/8/2017 18:17:25

"You were very generous, cordial in conducting the course. Your endeavour was great!"

12/8/2017 18:58:06

"The slides were well designed and were easy to follow."

12/8/2017 19:41:44

"Assignments were good, involved implementation of different data mining techniques I got to learn R.It was good class.Thank you Azim"

12/8/2017 20:52:36

"I really appreciated how you wouldn't mind going over a topic multiple times if you had noticed that someone didn't understand."

12/8/2017 21:34:05

"This class had the best structure. I think this was a really good way of learning and teaching. Apart from the course I have learned some teaching skills as well :D"

12/9/2017 15:12:17

"the slides"

12/9/2017 16:34:27

"Projects were good overall, good for practical practice. More on each would have been nice, then again admittedly most started on them the night before."

12/10/2017 1:26:12

"Pop quiz that makes students come to class."

12/10/2017 16:40:30

"You clearly understand the subject and always seeking what's wrong and how to improve it, the down side to that is we were lab rats"

12/10/2017 18:00:41

"Grade upkeep, pop quizzes to understand the lecture, mini-project helped improve my understanding of R."

12/10/2017 18:31:34

Question

What could be improved about this class?

"Going over some R"

12/7/2017 11:08:55

"Instruction on R. R was the hardest part of this course. We were told that it's not an R course and that was why we were not given any class instruction on R. To put it another way: we were told to write a short story in a literature class... and write it in French... even though practically no one in the class knew French to a worthwhile degree. And no French instruction was provided in the course. Yet we were expected to perform as if we knew French syntax and semantics to produce story without errors. Please note that R is incredibly useful for data mining, but it is not easy to learn on your own. I would take a full course on R if it was offered."

12/7/2017 11:08:55

"Less stress."

12/7/2017 11:15:57

"Maybe clarify the idea of a model early on with a few detailed, real-world examples of how data was used to generate a model. I understand the idea but how it was actually created in R was a bit confusing for me. Some basic in-class walkthroughs using R would be very useful prior to the first project. If you do this, the difficult of the mini-projects could be increased a bit as well as I spent most of my time researching very basic concepts in R for the first 2-3 projects. No one ever had to give their stories about why they were late to class :("

12/7/2017 11:33:17

"If R is used as a language alongside the class, it needs to be taught more in class or with a lab rather than just leaving it to the students to learn. Languages lose any usefulness they may have when learned incorrectly or with too little time devoted to them, which unfortunately isn't something measurable by someone learning them for the first time."

12/7/2017 12:36:21

"optional language choice"

12/7/2017 12:38:33

"It's better to allow us to choose the language what we want to use when finishing the project."

12/7/2017 16:13:11

"Introduction to a new programming language. Throwing us in to a new language with heavy-weighted Mini-Projects on the line was neither fair nor understandable. Learning a new language isn't the problem, if we were even given a chance to learn it. Flexibility. Not even a professional job (speaking from experience) has the amount of rigidity as this class did. Example; the deadlines couldn't move, no amount of rhyme or reason is ever good enough, no matter how correct. You almost made it seem like some third party was controlling the deadlines for your class and you had no control, even though you were calling the shots. Grading. Such lopsided grading on the Final project with details vague until the day of submission."

12/8/2017 6:05:02

"Since the class covers so much material at once, I would not suggest having it only one day. But that is the choice the student makes when picking classes."

12/8/2017 7:54:14

"More R clarification "

12/8/2017 12:35:21

"More tests during the semester"

12/8/2017 14:23:07

"Please less memes in the slides"

12/8/2017 14:24:09

"I think it could be improved by adding more in class assignments or a lab to give a better understanding of the material."

12/8/2017 18:17:25

"Besides using slides, you could in some places use boards efficiently. You did that but it was very small in amount."

12/8/2017 18:58:06

"Extra practice alongside the quizzes would be nice. "

12/8/2017 19:41:44

"class timings"

12/8/2017 20:52:36

"How the material is presented. The PowerPoints are helpful but it was too much content to learn in one class, regardless of how long the class is."

12/8/2017 21:34:05

"There is nothing in particular I want to point out. I gave 5 for everything except a 4 for mini-projects, only because they were very time consuming but that is the part where a student needs to improve on their programming skills."

12/9/2017 15:12:17

"better project"

12/9/2017 16:34:27

"slides are good, but some lack context and depth, its a hard balance but going back to can be difficult to go back and understand what your talking about. Would have been nice to have some class time for R. Specifically similarities were taught without much context on use besides attribute type"

12/10/2017 1:26:12

"Rather than just going over the slides it would have been better if the problem were done in r practically in class "

12/10/2017 16:40:30

"I'm sure you'll find out"

12/10/2017 18:00:41

"More practical examples pertaining to mini projects."
